The Genetics Society (aka Gensoc) is a one-stop shop for any and all geneticists, as well as anyone interested in science and genetics in particular. We value the importance of combining the academic and social aspects, in order to provide the perfect college experience for those involved. We are one of those small-ish close-knit societies who likes to look after its members by providing both academic (nerdy) and social fun.
This year we hope to increase the emphasis on academics more than ever before. Expect talks from guest speakers to discuss their respective areas of expertise. The annual genetics trip, which is one of the highlights of the year, includes attending a scientific conference in another institution to educate ourselves about the huge variety of scientific work being done outside the “UCC bubble” and generally have an awesome time! We hope to help integrate first year students into the course and guide them through the year ahead. As well as that we aim to increase the awareness of the 3rd and 4th years of what post-graduate prospects may lay ahead of them.
In all seriousness, we like to think of ourselves as the hub of social interaction for geneticists, where we provide the chance for you to meet and get to know like-minded people. We hold a number of social events during the year, from class parties and Christmas themed parties to table quiz nights with lots of cool prizes. Watch out for our mystery tour early on in the year, which has been known to be legendary in the past.
If you’re new to UCC or just looking for a new society that offers more than just the regular piss-up, come along and give Gensoc a try!
